Construction began in 1528, shortly after the city was founded by Diego de Mazariegos. Most of the building we see today was rebuilt during the 17th and 18th centuries. As the main church of the region, this building has been a silent witness to the most important events in the history of Chiapas, from colonial missions to modern peace talks.
