Acerca de este lugar
The Church of San Diego de Alcalá is the heart of one of the most traditional and charming neighborhoods in San Cristóbal de las Casas. Located in the southern part of the historic center, this building is loved for its simplicity. Its white facade with vibrant red details is elegant and simple, featuring a bell tower that still marks the rhythm of daily life for the local neighbors.
The temple sits in front of a large square, which is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved in the city. At the center of the square is a lovely "kiosko" (gazebo) made...
of iron and wood. This gazebo is the main meeting point where families talk, children play, and music fills the air during local festivals. The view of the church, the shady trees, and the gazebo creates a perfect postcard image of the peaceful life in the Chiapas highlands.
Historically, the San Diego neighborhood is known for its friendly people and ancient traditions. Inside, the church is modest but very warm. The altars are dedicated to Saint Diego, and you will often find the floor covered in "juncia" (fresh pine needles), which gives the space a wonderful natural and sacred scent. Visiting this church and its square is the best way to escape the busy tourist areas and experience the real daily life of the city.
💡 Consejos:
The Perfect Photo: For a great picture, stand behind the gazebo so its iron structure frames the front of the church. If you take the photo from a low angle, you can capture both icons in one deep shot.
A Relaxing Afternoon: This is the perfect place to grab a coffee...
or a dessert from a nearby café and sit on the benches. Unlike the main city square, the atmosphere here is much quieter and more relaxed—ideal for reading or writing.
Local Festivals: If you visit on November 13th (Saint Diego’s Day), you will experience an authentic neighborhood party. You can see processions, fireworks, and traditional food stalls all around the square.
Walk from the South: Walk toward the south starting from the "Arco del Carmen." This route allows you to see how the colonial houses become more residential and authentic, offering a real look at the city.
