Acerca de este lugar
Located within the El Ocote Jungle Biosphere Reserve in the municipality of Ocozocoautla, El Aguacero offers one of the most complete and visually striking adventure experiences in Chiapas. It is not just a single waterfall, but a natural phenomenon where the La Venta River plunges down the walls of a deep canyon, breaking into thousands of droplets that fall like a fine rain over moss-covered rocks—hence its name, "The Downpour." T
he setting is dramatic: limestone walls hundreds of meters high, hanging jungle vegetation, and the constant roar of water against stone.
To reach the heart of this paradise, visitors must face...
a physical challenge: descending (and later ascending) a staircase of approximately 740 steps that wind down the canyon slope. As you go down, the microclimate shifts, becoming more humid and cool. At the bottom, your effort is rewarded with a view of the main falls and the chance to explore the Cueva del Encanto (Enchantment Cave), a grotto where water flows through stalactites. During the dry season, the river level drops enough to allow hikes along the riverbed, revealing white sand beaches and whimsical rock formations.
El Aguacero retains a wild, raw atmosphere. Managed by a local cooperative focused on conservation, it is an essential destination for those seeking a deep physical and spiritual connection with nature.
💡 Consejos:
Physical Condition & Pacing: The 740 steps on the way back up are the hardest part. Take it slow, use the resting spots, and avoid the climb during the hottest hours (between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM).
Footwear & Gear: Wear sneakers with good grip or hiking boots. If you plan...
to walk along the river or enter the cave, bring water shoes (aquashoes). Don't forget a flashlight if you decide to explore the cave.
Best Season: Visit between January and May. During the rainy season (June to October), the river level rises significantly, the water becomes muddy, and access to the base or the cave may be restricted for safety.
Zero Waste: As this is a Biosphere Reserve, protection is strict. Everything you bring in (containers, food, paper) must leave with you. Help keep this sanctuary pristine.
