Acerca de este lugar
The Palenque Archaeological Site, nestled in the heart of the Chiapas tropical jungle, is one of the most significant and sophisticated ceremonial centers of the Mayan civilization.
Unlike other monumental sites, Palenque stands out for its refined architecture and exquisite stucco reliefs. These carvings precisely narrate the history of its most famous dynasty: that of K'inich Janaab' Pakal (Pakal the Great). It was during his 7th-century reign that the city reached its peak, becoming a political and military powerhouse that dominated much of the Usumacinta River basin.
The visual heart of the site is the Temple of the Inscriptions, a stepped...
pyramid housing Pakal’s burial chamber. The 1952 discovery of his sarcophagus by Alberto Ruz Lhuillier revolutionized modern archaeology by proving that Mayan pyramids also served as mausoleums. Opposite this stands the Palace complex, famous for its four-story tower—unique in the Mayan world—and interior courtyards decorated with captivating engravings.
Other essential structures include the Group of the Crosses (Temple of the Sun, the Cross, and the Foliated Cross), which represent Mayan cosmogony and the "axis mundi," situated on elevations that offer breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the surrounding jungle.
Exploring Palenque is a mystical experience: the contrast between the grayish limestone and the deep green vegetation, accompanied by the roar of howler monkeys, transports visitors to a time when astronomy and ritual governed daily life. To date, only a small percentage of the original city has been excavated; the rest remains hidden under the jungle, waiting to be discovered.
💡 Consejos:
Arrive Early: The site opens at 8:00 AM. Arriving early helps you avoid the crowds and the intense humid heat, while giving you the best chance to hear the howler monkeys in full activity.
Visit the Site Museum: Located before the main entrance, the Alberto Ruz Lhuillier Museum houses an exact...
replica of Pakal’s tomb and original jade jewelry. It is essential for understanding the context of the ruins, and it is also where you purchase your access tickets.
Hire a Certified Guide: Local guides offer "jungle tours" that show you temples still covered by vegetation and explain the use of ancient medicinal plants. It’s a fascinating perspective you won't get on the main paths alone.
Prepare for the Climate: Bring plenty of water, insect repellent, and biodegradable sunscreen. Wear light-colored clothing made of natural fibers to help manage the region's stifling heat.
