Acerca de este lugar
The Tenam Puente Archaeological Site is one of the most fascinating and least explored locations in the Chiapas Highlands.
Its name is a hybrid: "Tenam," which in Tseltal means "fortification" or "wall," and "Puente," referring to the name of the old estate where it is located. Unlike the lowland Mayan cities like Palenque or Yaxchilán, Tenam Puente was built on a series of hills overlooking the Comitán Valley. This provided a strategic vantage point for both defense and the control of trade between the highlands and the jungle.
The site stands out for its impeccable limestone architecture, where blocks were cut...
and fitted with such precision that many structures did not require mortar. The city is organized into an acropolis that ascends the mountainside, culminating in the Main Plaza. One of the most distinctive features of Tenam Puente is the presence of three ball courts, suggesting the immense ritual and political importance of this activity. Remarkably, while many Mayan centers collapsed in the 9th century, Tenam Puente survived until the early Postclassic period (approx. 1200 AD), making it a key link in understanding Mayan transition.
Exploring this site is an experience of absolute serenity. Surrounded by a forest of pine and oak, visitors can walk among pyramids and palaces accompanied only by the mountain breeze. Tenam Puente is not only a testament to Mayan engineering but also a natural lookout offering some of the most beautiful sunsets in the state.
💡 Consejos:
The Perfect Combo: Due to its proximity (about 15 minutes from Comitán), it is the ideal complement to a trip to the Montebello Lakes or Cenote Chukumaltik.
Comfortable Hike: While there are levels to climb, the ascent is much less demanding than at Toniná. Nevertheless, wear comfortable shoes and bring water,...
as the midday sun in the plains can be intense.
Cool Climate: Unlike the jungle, the weather here is temperate. If you visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon, bring a light jacket, as the wind at the top of the acropolis is usually chilly.
Museum & Services: The site has a small information module and basic services. It is recommended to bring snacks from Comitán, as food options at the site are limited.
