The Viewpoints of the Sumidero Canyon, situated along a 17-kilometer winding road on the mountain’s crest, offer the most dizzying and majestic perspective of this geological marvel. five official stops reveals the true scale of the abyss, showcasing limestone walls that drop nearly 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) vertically. This visual journey transitions through different microclimates, from lowland jungle at the base to oak forests at the highest points of the National Park.
The route begins with La Ceiba, offering an introductory view of the river. It is followed by La Coyota, where the depth becomes strikingly evident. However, El Roblar provides a more immersive experience, as a trail through dense vegetation leads you to the very edge of the precipice. The fourth stop, El Tepehuaje, is a strategic point for birdwatching, specifically for King Vultures and eagles soaring on thermal currents.
The grand finale is Los Chiapa, located at the highest and narrowest part of the rift; it provides the most famous postcard view of Chiapas: the Grijalva River making a sharp 90-degree turn between colossal walls.

Ideal Timing: Visit between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM. Visibility is clearest during these hours, the heat is moderate, and you have the best chance of seeing birds of prey soaring near the balconies.

Safety & Trails: Always respect the signs and never climb over the safety railings. At the El Roblar viewpoint, the trail can be damp; wear shoes with good grip.
