Acerca de este lugar
Declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1980, the Agua Azul Waterfalls are one of Mexico’s most breathtaking natural wonders.
The world-famous turquoise color is the result of carbonate salts and magnesium chlorides dissolved in the water. When these minerals meet sunlight and the riverbed, they filter out all colors except blue, reflecting it back to the surface in a stunning visual display.
The park features a network of trails about 2 kilometers long that line the river. As you climb, you’ll discover a series of stepped falls and natural pools held back by limestone dams called "gours." Along the path, there are...
designated swimming areas where the currents are gentler—perfect for cooling off in crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush jungle. If you’re lucky, you might even spot local wildlife like howler monkeys, toucans, or macaws.
The site is well-equipped with local restaurants (famous for their empanadas and fresh fish), handicraft shops run by the regional Tseltal communities, and areas for camping or renting rustic cabins.
💡 Consejos:
Best Time for Color: Visit between November and May (dry season). During the rainy season (June to October), sediment increases and the water can turn brown or dark green, losing its signature turquoise hue.
Explore Further: Don’t stop at the first viewpoints near the entrance where it’s most crowded. Follow the...
ascending path to the upper sections to find quieter pools and more spectacular views.
Cash is King: There are no ATMs in the area. Bring enough cash to pay for the entrance fees (which are often collected at two different points for a total of about 50-60 MXN), food, and souvenirs.
Safety and Health: Wear shoes with good grip to avoid slipping on damp stairs. Use biodegradable insect repellent and sunscreen to protect the ecosystem. Important: Before swimming, always ask locals or guides if the specific area is safe, as there can be dangerous underwater currents.
The Journey: From San Cristóbal, it’s a 3.5 to 4-hour drive. The road has many curves, and it’s common to encounter small "community toll" stops asking for voluntary contributions. Booking a tour is often the most stress-free way to visit.
