Acerca de este lugar
Located in the municipality of La Trinitaria, near Comitán de Domínguez, Cenote Chukumaltik is one of the most surprising and mystical underwater gems in Chiapas.
Unlike the cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula, which are typically found in flat terrain, Chukumaltik sits in a transition zone between the Highlands and the jungle. It is an open body of water approximately 200 meters in diameter with depths reaching 70 meters. Its waters are absolutely transparent; on clear days, visibility can exceed 40 meters, allowing sunlight to penetrate deep and create spectacular light displays.
What truly makes this cenote famous is its underwater "museum,"...
making it the premier diving destination in Chiapas. In its depths, divers can find a series of surreal curiosities: a statue of the Virgen de los Dolores submerged at about 15 meters, an altar, a small cave, and sulfur deposits that look like white clouds trapped on the bottom. Additionally, the cenote houses petrified trees that remain standing underwater, creating a fantasy-like landscape. For those preferring the surface, the water temperature stays a comfortable 24°C (75°F), perfect for snorkeling or swimming amidst the surrounding rock formations.
The site is rustic and managed by the local community, offering a direct connection with nature without the crowds. While it lacks luxury infrastructure, it provides the essentials for a day of adventure: picnic areas, basic restrooms, and camping spots.
💡 Consejos:
Certified Diving: To see the Virgin and the petrified trees, you will need diving gear. Tour operators in Comitán and San Cristóbal organize specialized expeditions. If you are just swimming, bring your own mask to enjoy the incredible clarity from the surface.
Sun Protection: As an open cenote, you will be...
directly exposed to the sun. Biodegradable sunscreen is mandatory to protect the water's ecosystem and local fish.
Access: The entrance road can be a bit bumpy; a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. This spot is perfect to combine with a trip to Lagos de Colón or the El Lagartero archaeological site.
Limited Services: Bring your own food and drinks, as there aren't always vendors on-site. Remember to bring a trash bag to carry out all your waste.
