Acerca de este lugar
The Metzabok Lagoon, which in the Lacandon language means "God Who Makes Thunder," is a sanctuary of peace and mysticism located among the mountains of the Lacandon Jungle in the municipality of Ocosingo.
This protected area is a complex of 21 lagoons with emerald and turquoise waters that act as mirrors, surrounded by impenetrable jungle vegetation. Metzabok is more than just a scenic destination; it is one of the most sacred spiritual centers for the Northern Lacandon community, who have guarded this territory and its ancient rituals for centuries.
The experience at Metzabok is deeply contemplative. Navigating in traditional wooden canoes...
(cayucos) led by Lacandon guides, you traverse bodies of water connected by natural channels.
During the journey, the jungle’s silence is only broken by the screech of macaws or the howl of spider monkeys. One of the most striking highlights is visiting the caves and cenotes located in the lagoon cliffs, which house rock paintings and archaeological remains that the Lacandons consider portals to the underworld. The limestone walls, draped in moss and bromeliads, hold stories of ancient offerings to the gods.
Visiting this corner of Chiapas requires a spirit of respect and simplicity. As it is a small and remote community, tourism is low-impact, ensuring a genuine connection with the local inhabitants. Here, the rush of the world disappears; life is governed by the rhythm of the sun and the water. Metzabok is the ideal refuge for those seeking to escape conventional tourist routes and immerse themselves in an ecosystem where archaeology, Mayan mythology, and biodiversity fuse in an eternal embrace.
💡 Consejos:
Access & Logistics: The lagoon is about 2 hours from Palenque via a mix of paved and dirt roads. It is recommended to use a robust vehicle or hire a local tour operator who knows the route well. Tours also depart from San Cristóbal de las Casas.
Respect Sacred Sites: Some...
caves and specific areas of the lagoon have restrictions on photography or access, as they are active sites for Lacandon ceremonies. Always follow your guide’s instructions.
Hike to the Lookout: Do not miss the trek to the main viewpoint (el mirador). The panoramic view of the interconnected lagoons from above is, quite simply, one of the best postcard views in all of Chiapas.
Sustainability: Bring biodegradable personal care products and minimize your plastic waste. Resources in the community are limited, and the ecosystem is extremely fragile.
Be Prepared: There is no cell service or ATMs in the area. Bring enough cash for your stay and guide fees, and embrace the digital disconnect.
