Acerca de este lugar
Na Bolom, or "The House of the Jaguar," is much more than a museum; it is the heart of the movement to preserve the Chiapas jungle and protect its original inhabitants, the Lacandon people.
Founded in 1950 by Danish archaeologist Frans Blom and Swiss photographer Gertrude Duby Blom, this 19th-century building became a center for research and activism. For decades, it has served as a home in the city for the Lacandons, providing them with a place to rest, medical care, and legal support.
The museum’s importance lies in its work to document and safeguard Lacandon culture. It holds an invaluable...
archive of photos and documents showing the daily life and rituals of the Maya people before modern contact changed their customs. Gertrude Duby, known as the "Queen of the Jungle," used her camera to show the world the fragility of the ecosystem and its people. Today, Na Bolom acts as a bridge, using its resources to fund reforestation and support jungle communities like Lacanjá Chansayab.
Walking through Na Bolom is like entering an oasis. Its courtyards are filled with jungle plants, and its specialized library and famous dining room reflect a spirit of global community. The exhibits show ceremonial objects and textiles with great dignity. Visiting this house-museum helps you understand that protecting nature is the same as protecting culture.
