Acerca de este lugar
A unique 17th-century monument that served as the city's gateway and a religious bell tower.
The Carmen Arch and its church are the most iconic and photographed symbols of San Cristóbal de las Casas. Originally built as a bell tower and entrance for the old Convent of the Incarnation, this structure is a rare example of "Mudéjar" style (Spanish-Moorish influence) in southeast Mexico.
Built in 1677, the Arch is famous for its square design and impressive wooden ceiling. Its grand presence has made it the "gateway to the city," marking the start of the pedestrian walkway and connecting the historic center with...
the southern neighborhoods.
A few steps away is the El Carmen Church. Although the original convent is mostly gone, the church remains a peaceful and quiet place. Its simple facade is surrounded by a beautiful garden. Inside, the religious art tells the story of the Carmelite nuns who once lived there in prayer and silence.
In the past, this area was the heart of social and religious life. The arch, which looks like a stone lighthouse, held the bells for mass and also served as a lookout point to watch over the city. Today, the old convent is a cultural center where you can enjoy workshops, art exhibits, and concerts.
💡 Consejos:
Postcard View: The best spot for a photo is from the Miguel Hidalgo walkway. If you stand one block away, you can capture the depth of the street with the arch perfectly framing the view, especially when it is lit up at night.
Visit the Cultural Center: Go inside the building...
next to the church. The interior courtyards are beautifully restored and usually have free exhibitions. It is a perfect place to escape the noise and enjoy the classic architecture.
Look at the Ceiling: When you are standing under the Arch, remember to look up. The wooden dome is a masterpiece of colonial woodwork that many people miss while walking by.
Watch for Traffic: Although the main walkway is for pedestrians, a street with cars crosses directly under the arch. Be careful when taking photos from the middle of the street; there is always traffic moving through.
