Acerca de este lugar
Climb the tallest pyramid in Mexico—a labyrinth of seven platforms dominating the Ocosingo Valley.
The Toniná Archaeological Site, whose Tseltal name means "The Place of Stone Houses," is one of the most imposing and unique sites in the Mayan world. Located in a transition valley between the Highlands and the jungle, Toniná differs radically from other sites due to its vertical structure: it is a giant acropolis built upon a natural hill, rising in seven terraced platforms to a height of 75 meters. This configuration makes it one of the tallest pyramids in pre-Hispanic Mexico, even surpassing the Pyramid of...
the Sun in Teotihuacán.
Historically, Toniná was an ambitious warrior city. Unlike the artistic elegance of Palenque, Toniná projected intimidating military power. It was Palenque’s great rival, and its warriors famously captured high-ranking rulers from that city. On its platforms, you can observe fascinating spaces like the Mural of the Four Suns, a stucco masterpiece representing the myth of the eras of creation, and the Palace of the Grecas. As you ascend through its labyrinthine stairways and interior passages, you reach the summit’s sacred temples, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the Ocosingo Valley that is simply breathtaking.
The site also houses an exceptional Site Museum, considered one of the best in the region. It exhibits stone sculptures of impressive quality, including depictions of prisoners of war and rulers that showcase a three-dimensional style highly advanced for its time. Visiting Toniná is a physical and spiritual experience; the effort of climbing its levels is rewarded by the energy emanating from its stones and the tranquility of a site that remains less crowded than Palenque.

Don't Miss the Museum: Do not make the mistake of skipping the museum. The sculptures housed there are fundamental to understanding the warrior mentality and the cult of death central to this city.
