Zinacantán, which means "Land of Bats" in Nahuatl, is a Tsotsil Maya town located in a picturesque valley just 11 kilometers from San Cristóbal de las Casas.
Unlike the mystical solemnity of San Juan Chamula, Zinacantán welcomes visitors with an explosion of color, flowers, and exceptional community warmth. This town is famous throughout Chiapas for two fundamental pillars: its mastery of artisan embroidery and its vast production of flowers, with hillsides covered in greenhouses growing roses, chrysanthemums, and gerberas.

One of the most enriching experiences in Zinacantán is visiting an artisan's home. In these households, women preserve the backstrap loom technique, a complex pre-Hispanic heritage. Visitors are often invited into the traditional kitchen to taste handmade tortillas cooked on a wood-fired comal, accompanied by local cheese and a sip of Pox. In Zinacantán, weaving and the land are how history remains alive.
