While it is modest in size compared to nearby Yaxchilán, Bonampak holds the most valuable artistic treasure of the Mayan civilization: the Temple of the Paintings. Its three interior chambers house the best-preserved and most detailed pre-Hispanic murals ever discovered, painted around 790 AD under the rule of Chaan Muan II.

These murals offer an unparalleled window into the courtly and military life of the ancient Maya. Unlike the static art found elsewhere, the paintings of Bonampak overflow with realism and movement, narrating a complex story in three acts: the presentation of an heir to the throne, a fierce battle in the jungle, and the bloody sacrifice of prisoners on the steps. The artists used a "fresco" technique, applying mineral pigments to a damp layer of lime, which allowed the vibrant Mayan blues, oxide reds, and yellows to survive centuries of extreme jungle humidity.

Visiting Bonampak is also a lesson in community tourism. The site is located within the territory of the Lacandon Community, who act as its custodians. The experience of walking through the Great Plaza, surrounded by perfectly carved stone stelae and under the canopy of ancient trees, offers a deep connection to a past that remains alive through its modern-day guardians.
2026-02-01 community vehicles are allowed into the site. You must switch vehicles at the San Javier junction; the cost is usually included in tours or paid as a separate fee to the Lacandon guides.

Lighting for Murals: Flash photography is strictly prohibited to protect the ancient pigments. Bring a camera with good low-light performance, but remember that seeing them with your own eyes is the best way to capture the intricate stucco details.

Climate and Clothing: You are in the heart of the jungle. The heat is very humid, and insects are plentiful. Wear breathable long-sleeved clothing, biodegradable repellent, and closed-toe shoes.

Combine with Yaxchilán: Most travelers visit Bonampak and Yaxchilán on the same day.
