Unlike the lowland Mayan cities like Palenque or Yaxchil\u00e1n, Tenam Puente was built on a series of hills overlooking the Comit\u00e1n Valley. This provided a strategic vantage point for both defense and the control of trade between the highlands and the jungle.\r\n\r\nThe site stands out for its impeccable limestone architecture, where blocks were cut and fitted with such precision that many structures did not require mortar. The city is organized into an acropolis that ascends the mountainside, culminating in the Main Plaza. One of the most distinctive features of Tenam Puente is the presence of three ball courts, suggesting the immense ritual and political importance of this activity. Remarkably, while many Mayan centers collapsed in the 9th century, Tenam Puente survived until the early Postclassic period (approx. 1200 AD), making it a key link in understanding Mayan transition.\r\n\r\nExploring this site is an experience of absolute serenity.
