Acerca de este lugar
Descend into the depths of an abyss where the flight of thousands of birds and ancient rock paintings converge.
The Sima de las Cotorras, located in the municipality of Ocozocoautla, is one of the most spectacular geological wonders of the Zoque region in Chiapas. This sinkhole (or doline) measures 160 meters in diameter and has a vertical drop of 140 meters. This gigantic limestone "cup" is not only impressive for its size but also for the unique ecosystem at its bottom, where a tropical forest has grown in isolation from the outside world.
The site is named after the natural phenomenon...
that occurs every sunrise and sunset: thousands of Green Parakeets (Psittacara holochlorus) that nest in the walls emerge in a noisy, coordinated flight. The show begins at dawn as the birds fly in concentric circles to gain height until they clear the abyss to search for food; in the evening, the process reverses, creating a whirlwind of feathers and calls echoing off the rock walls.
Beyond birdwatching, the Sima de las Cotorras is an archaeological sanctuary. At various heights on the walls, you can spot rock paintings dating back thousands of years, attributed to the Zoque culture. These depictions of hands, human figures, and animals in ochre and red suggest the site was once a sacred space or an astronomical observatory. For adrenaline seekers, the site offers the chance to rappel down its walls or walk the "Path of Death," a narrow perimeter trail along the inner edge.
💡 Consejos:
Punctual Arrival: To see the parrots depart, you must be at the site before 6:00 AM. If you prefer to see their return, the spectacle occurs between 5:00 PM and 6:30 PM. Outside of these windows, the sinkhole is impressive, but the birds will be gone.
Local Lodging: The ecotourism center...
features cabins and a camping area. Staying on-site is the best way to ensure you catch the morning flight without having to travel from Tuxtla Gutiérrez in the early hours.
Rappelling & Safety: If you plan to descend, ensure you hire the certified on-site guides. The equipment is professional, and the experience of hanging in the middle of the abyss is unforgettable.
Climate & Gear: The area is hot and dry during the day but can cool down at night. Wear comfortable clothing, sunscreen, and footwear with good traction.
Silent Observation: When the parakeets are emerging or returning, try to remain quiet. Sudden loud noises can disturb their natural flight patterns.
