The Yaxchilán Archaeological Site, whose name means "Green Stones," is one of the most adventurous and mystical destinations in the Mayan world.
Situated on a peninsula embraced by a massive bend in the Usumacinta River, on the natural border between Mexico and Guatemala, this city reached its peak under legendary rulers like Shield Jaguar II and Bird Jaguar IV. What makes Yaxchilán truly special is its isolation: the only way to access the site is via a 45-minute boat journey through the waters of Mexico’s mightiest river, departing from the community of Frontera Corozal.

The climb to the Great Acropolis is a challenge rewarded by the sight of Building 33, the city’s best-preserved temple, decorated with an impressive roof comb and a headless statue of Bird Jaguar IV.
