Acerca de este lugar
The Montebello Lakes National Park is one of Mexico’s most spectacular natural treasures and the first protected area in Chiapas.
This collection of over 50 lagoons is famous for the incredible variety of colors in its waters, ranging from pale blue and turquoise to emerald green and deep violet. These colors are created by the depth of each lake, the surrounding vegetation, and the way the sun reflects off the limestone minerals on the bottom, making every body of water unique.
The park is divided into two main areas.
The first is the "Colored Lakes" zone, home to iconic spots like...
La Esmeralda, La Encantada, and Bosque Azul. These are surrounded by pine and oak forests filled with orchids, perfect for contemplation and light hiking.
The second area is Lake Tziscao, one of the largest and deepest, located right on the border with Guatemala. This area has a more community-focused feel, offering cabins and restaurants with views of the Guatemalan mountains.
One of the most authentic experiences here is navigating the lakes on traditional cork-log rafts. This method allows you to glide silently across the water without harming the ecosystem. Guides often take visitors to small islands or flooded caves. With its crisp mountain air and the mist that often hugs the pines, Montebello is a place of breathtaking peace and mystical beauty.
💡 Consejos:
Climate and Light: The best time to see the intensity of the colors is between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, when the sun is at its highest. The weather is cool and damp; always bring a sweater or a windbreaker.
The Guatemalan Border: In the Tziscao area, you can literally walk...
across to the Guatemalan side to visit small stalls selling coffee and handicrafts. Bring cash, as there are no ATMs in this remote rural area.
The Route: From San Cristóbal, the trip takes 2.5 to 3 hours. It is best to stop in the city of Comitán first for breakfast or fuel. Taking a tour is often the best option to avoid the hassle of driving.
Environmental Care: This is a fragile ecosystem. If you plan to swim, avoid using chemical sunscreens and never leave trash behind. The preservation of these unique colors depends entirely on visitor respect.
