Acerca de este lugar
El Huitepec, located on an extinct volcano of the same name, is the most important "green lung" of San Cristóbal and a sanctuary for biodiversity. This cloud forest offers a total immersion into the nature of the Highlands. Walking its trails takes you through ancient oaks and wild orchids, where the air is pure and a magical mist often wraps around the mountain.
The big news at the reserve is the new viewpoint located in the "antenas" (antenna) area, the highest point of the mountain. After a challenging uphill hike, the forest opens up to reveal a structure with the most...
spectacular view of the entire Jovel Valley. From here, the city looks like a tiny model of red tiles surrounded by mountains. It is the perfect spot to watch clouds move over the hills or, on clear days, see the distant peaks of the Sierra Madre.
To get there, take the old highway to Tuxtla until you reach the San Felipe combi terminal. From this point, the climb to the top begins. It is very important to use a map, as there are several turns that can easily confuse visitors. You can reach the viewpoint in two ways: by a vigorous hike up a steep slope, or by vehicle. If you drive, a truck or SUV is highly recommended; a small car may struggle with the steep, uneven terrain. There is a 35-pesos access fee per person for the viewpoint area.
Historically and spiritually, El Huitepec is sacred to the Tsotsil people, who see it as a connection to the deities of water and the mountain. Visiting is not just about hiking; it is an act of respect for the ecosystem that provides the city’s water. Reaching the top is the ultimate reward for the conscious traveler—a place where the silence is only broken by birdsong.
💡 Consejos:
Safe Route: Download an offline map before you go. When you reach San Felipe, ask locals for the "subida a las antenas" (the climb to the antennas) to make sure you are on the right path.
Viewpoint Fee: The 35-pesos fee is per person. Bring exact change to make the process...
easier with the local staff at the site.
Vehicle Choice: If you aren't driving a 4x4, ensure your car is in great mechanical shape. Avoid driving up if it has rained heavily, as the road can become very slippery and dangerous for standard cars.
Warm Clothing is a Must: If you go for sunrise or sunset, the temperature at the top will be much colder than in the city. The wind is constant at that altitude, so bring a heavy jacket and a warm drink to enjoy while you take in the view.
Panoramic Photography: This is the best place for landscape photos. Try to go early in the morning (5 am) to capture the mist rising from the city, or at sunset (5 pm) to see the city lights begin to twinkle.
