Acerca de este lugar
The Sumidero Canyon is the geological emblem of Chiapas and one of the most impressive natural rifts in the Americas.
Located just minutes from Tuxtla Gutiérrez and the Pueblo Mágico of Chiapa de Corzo, this canyon was sculpted over 12 million years by the force of the Grijalva River. Its limestone walls rise almost vertically, reaching heights of up to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet), creating a monumental landscape that leaves visitors with a profound sense of awe. It is a vibrant ecosystem home to river crocodiles, spider monkeys, herons, and the majestic king vulture.
There are two complementary ways to experience...
the canyon: by water and by land. In this post, we focus on the water excursion.
The boat tour, which departs from the docks in Chiapa de Corzo, is a 32-kilometer journey that reveals whimsical formations like the "Christmas Tree"—a massive moss-covered wall where falling water and mineral deposits have created the shape of a giant pine. You will also visit the "Cave of Colors," where mineral filtrations have stained the rock in shades of pink and ochre. The navigation culminates at the towering Chicoasén Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric engineering works in Mexico.
For a bird’s-eye view, the Viewpoints Route (accessible by land) offers five strategic stops: La Ceiba, La Coyota, El Roblar, El Tepehuaje, and Los Chiapa. From these natural watchtowers, the Grijalva River looks like a thin green ribbon at the bottom of the abyss. This park is more than just a nature reserve; it is a symbol of Chiapanecan identity, even appearing on the state’s coat of arms.
💡 Consejos:
Pick the Right Time: For the boat tour, the best window is between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. You’ll avoid the harshest midday sun and have a better chance of spotting crocodiles sunbathing on the banks.
Sun & Wind Protection: Some boats do not have canopies. The water’s reflection and the...
wind can cause sunburn before you even feel it. Use biodegradable sunscreen, a hat with a chin strap (so it doesn't fly off), and sunglasses.
Complete the Experience: After your boat ride, stay for lunch in Chiapa de Corzo. Head to the central park and try the local Cochito horneado (roasted pork) and the traditional cocoa-based drink known as Pozol de cacao.
Keep it Clean: The canyon sometimes faces challenges with floating waste brought in by the river. Support conservation efforts by using authorized operators and never throwing trash into the water.
