Acerca de este lugar
Standing at an impressive height of 62 meters (203 feet), this structure surpasses iconic monuments like Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer or Bolivia’s Christ of Peace, solidifying its place as one of the tallest religious monuments in the world.
Popularly known as the Cristo de Copoya, it rises atop the Mactumactzá hill, dominating the horizon of the state capital, Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
The design is a piece of architectural vanguard. Unlike traditional solid statues, the Christ of Copoya is a three-dimensional hollow structure built with stainless steel and lightweight materials. This "openwork" design allows the wind to pass through, giving it an ethereal,...
modern appearance.
The figure is not a closed representation of Jesus but a silhouette that suggests his presence through light and space. During the day, the sun filters through the structure; at night, a high-tech LED lighting system transforms it into a glowing beacon visible from almost anywhere in the city.
The site is located in the ejido of Copoya, historically a stronghold of Zoque culture. Visiting the complex offers more than a spiritual journey; the visitor center, chapel, and wide esplanade provide a peaceful environment for reflection. From its viewpoint, you gain the most privileged panoramic view of the state's central depression, capturing the urban layout of Tuxtla and the surrounding mountains in a single gaze.
💡 Consejos:
Light and Color Schedule: To witness the lighting spectacle, plan to arrive around 6:30 PM. You can enjoy the sunset over the city and, minutes later, see the Christ illuminate in various colors.
Sun and Wind Protection: Since the monument is in an open area at the top of a hill,...
the sun is very intense during the day. However, the wind blows strongly in the afternoon—bring sunscreen for the morning and a light jacket for the evening.
Zoque Gastronomía: Don't miss the town of Copoya at the base of the hill. Visit the local "backyard kitchens" (comida de patio) to try traditional Zoque delicacies like cochito horneado (roasted pork), nucú (edible ants, in season), or a cold bowl of pozol.
Transport & Access: The access road is steep and winding. If driving, ensure your vehicle is in good condition. Public transport (colectivos) runs from downtown Tuxtla Gutiérrez directly to Copoya, stopping near the main entrance.
Photography: The viewpoint is one of the best spots in Chiapas for wide-angle city photography, especially as the city lights begin to flicker on at dusk.
